Doula Pricing Explained: What to Expect and How to Save

For some parents, every dollar counts when you’re getting ready to welcome a new baby into the world. But you can't put a price on peace of mind. So, how much does a postpartum doula really cost? This is a common question we get, so we want to answer that a little more in-depth.

Paying for A Doula

In our area, a postpartum doula can run anywhere from $30 to $65 per hour, depending on their experience, expertise, and services. Hiring a postpartum doula is more than just hiring someone to help out. It’s an investment in your physical and mental well-being and your baby’s.

Insurance Reimbursement

Your insurance may cover some or all of your doula costs. While it’s not a guarantee, it’s worth calling your insurance provider to find out if they reimburse for doula services. You might need to fill out some forms and provide a letter of necessity from your healthcare provider, but it’s worth the effort if it means saving money. Also, even if your insurance won’t cover postpartum doula support - you calling helps them make note this request is becoming more and more common, and what a need it is so they can consider covering doula support in the future.

Carrot Fertility

If your employer offers Carrot Fertility benefits, you could be in luck. Carrot Fertility offers benefits covering doula services, which can be a huge relief for many families. Check with your HR department or a Carrot Fertility representative to see if this benefit is available at your place of work. As postpartum doulas, we’ve helped dozens of families use carrot fertility and get reimbursement for doula support, making our services completely free of charge to you.

Add Doula Services to Your Registry

Did you know you can add doula services to your baby registry? Platforms like
Be Her Village or even Baby List make it easy to do just that. Instead of getting more swaddles or bibs (we know you appreciate them, but you’ll get so many), your friends and family can contribute to your doula fund or practical support - make sure to add pelvic floor therapy or a lactation consultant while you’re at it too. It’s a great way to get the support you need without breaking the bank.

HSA and Payment Plans

If you have a Health Savings Account (HSA), you may be able to use those pre-tax dollars to pay for postpartum doula services. Just check with your HSA provider to confirm. Many doulas also offer payment plans, making spreading the cost over time easier. Don’t be afraid to ask. Most doulas understand the importance of financial flexibility, including us!

Is it worth the money?

When you hire a doula, you pay for professional guidance for a huge life transition. The care you receive from a doula who will support your whole family is worth every penny. You deserve to feel confident and cared for as you navigate the postpartum period. Hiring a doula gives you peace of mind in a way you won’t find anywhere else.
