FAQs

Everything You Need to Know Before Hiring a Postpartum Doula

What is a postpartum doula, and what do they do?

A postpartum doula provides hands-on support for new parents after birth. Our team focuses on helping you recover, bond with your baby, and adjust to life with a newborn. This can include newborn care, maternal recovery support, meal preparation, emotional support, and light household tasks. We’re here to ensure you feel cared for, rested, and confident during postpartum.

What are the advantages of working with a Doula agency like Bountiful Doulas?

Working with our team means you’re getting more than just one person—you’re gaining access to a network of expertise, personalized support, and built-in backup to ensure you’re always cared for.

Here’s what sets us apart:

  • Personalized Doula matching: We match you with a doula whose expertise and personality align with your family’s needs.

  • Built-in backup: If your primary doula is unavailable due to illness or an emergency, we have a team of equally trained professionals ready to step in, ensuring uninterrupted support.

  • Variety of knowledge: Our team includes experts in newborn care, lactation, sleep coaching, and postpartum nutrition, giving you access to well-rounded guidance across every aspect of postpartum life.

  • Seamless transitions: If your care needs evolve over time, we can easily adjust your support plan or connect you with additional team members for specialized services.

Why should I hire a Postpartum Doula instead of relying on family or friends?

While family and friends can be helpful, a postpartum doula offers professional, non-judgmental support tailored to your family’s needs. We’re trained in newborn care, lactation, maternal recovery, and holistic family support. We help with things your family may not be equipped to handle, like creating a sustainable feeding plan, soothing a fussy baby, or preparing meals that promote healing.

How soon should I book a Postpartum Doula?

We recommend booking as early as possible during pregnancy, as our schedules fill up quickly. Many families book around the second trimester to ensure availability. However, we’re happy to accommodate last-minute bookings when possible.

How long do families typically use a Postpartum Doula?

It varies by family, but many work with us for 4-16 weeks postpartum, depending on their needs. We’ve supported several families for 6+ months when needed! Some families book long-term support, especially if they need help with sleep, lactation, or household management.

Do you offer both Daytime and Overnight support?

Yes! We provide flexible support to fit your family’s needs, whether you need help managing your day or rest through the night.

  • Daytime support: Focuses on newborn care, local errands, sibling care, light meal prep, light household tasks, and supporting your recovery.

  • Overnight support: Allows you to sleep while we care for your baby, handling feedings, diaper changes, and soothing.

Many families choose a combination of both to ensure well-rounded postpartum care.

What’s the difference between a postpartum doula and a night nanny?

While both provide overnight care, the key differences are:

  • Postpartum Doula: Offers holistic care, including maternal recovery support, emotional guidance, lactation help, meal prep, and baby care. They are trained to nurture the entire family.

  • Night Nanny: Primarily focuses on watching the baby and completing tasks like diaper changes and bottle feeding without offering broader postpartum recovery or emotional support. It’s important to note Night Nannies usually don’t have additional training or certifications when it comes to Newborn or Postpartum care.

If you’re looking for more than just baby care, a postpartum doula can provide the well-rounded support you need.

What does “gentle sleep coaching” mean?

Our gentle sleep coaching involves creating sleep routines that respect your baby’s developmental needs without using harsh methods like cry-it-out. We prioritize gradual, supportive techniques that help establish healthy sleep foundations while ensuring your baby feels safe and cared for.

Do you use the cry-it-out method for sleep coaching?

No, at Bountiful Doulas we will not use the cry-it-out or extinction method. We believe in responsive, compassionate care. Our sleep coaching focuses on building trust and security using baby-led, gradual methods.

What’s included in meal prep during postpartum doula shifts?

We prepare nutrient-dense meals and snacks that promote recovery and sustained energy. This may include healing soups, lactation-boosting snacks, and simple comfort meals. We’ll customize everything to fit your dietary needs and preferences. Need more heavy meal prepping? Look at our Meal Planning Services

Can you help with lactation or bottle-feeding?

Yes! We provide lactation guidance, help troubleshoot feeding challenges, and support bottle-feeding routines. Our goal is to ensure you feel confident in your feeding plan, whether you’re nursing, pumping, or bottle-feeding.

What household tasks do you help with during shifts?

We assist with light household tasks that directly support your recovery and baby care routine.

This includes:

  • Washing bottles and pump parts
  • Baby laundry and folding clothes
  • Tidying up baby spaces
  • Light cleaning (wiping down counters, straightening up the nursery, etc.)
  • Meal prep and snack preparation

If you need more extensive cleaning services, we can provide referrals to trusted professionals.

Do you offer virtual support if I’m outside of Northern Utah?

Yes! Our virtual services include meal planning, gentle sleep coaching, and lactation support, so you can access expert help no matter where you live.

What happens if I need to cancel or reschedule a shift?

We understand that life with a newborn can be unpredictable. We have a flexible rescheduling policy, but we kindly ask for as much notice as possible to accommodate your needs. For cancellations, refer to our full policy provided during the consultation.

Are postpartum doula services covered by insurance?

While traditional insurance typically doesn’t cover doula services, some families use health savings accounts (HSAs) or flexible spending accounts (FSAs) to help with costs. We recommend checking with your provider to see what options are available.

How do I get started with your services?
