FAQs

Frequently asked questions about nighttime postpartum and infant support.

What does a nighttime postpartum doula do during overnight shifts?

We provide full-spectrum support during the night, including newborn care (feedings, diaper changes, and soothing), maternal recovery support (hydration, emotional reassurance, and assistance with night nursing if applicable), and light household tasks (washing bottles, tidying the nursery, folding baby laundry). Our goal is to help you get restorative sleep while we handle the rest.

How do you handle nighttime feedings?

If you’re bottle feeding, we’ll handle everything from start to finish—feeding, burping, changing diapers, and settling your baby back to sleep. If you’re nursing, we’ll support your preferred routine by assisting with positioning, burping, and settling your baby after the feed, ensuring you can return to bed as quickly as possible.

Do I need to be awake during the night?

Not necessarily! If your baby is bottle-fed, you can sleep through the night while we manage feedings and care. If you’re nursing or pumping, we’ll wake you when it’s time to feed or pump, and handle the rest—diaper changes, burping, and soothing—so you can quickly return to bed.

Can you help with lactation support overnight?

Yes! Our team is trained to provide lactation support during nighttime feeds, whether you’re nursing or pumping. We can help troubleshoot latch issues, offer tips for maximizing milk output, and clean pump parts after each session.

What tasks do you complete during overnight shifts?

In addition to caring for your baby, we complete light household tasks to help you wake up to a calm, organized space. These tasks may include:

  • Washing and sterilizing bottles or pump parts
  • Folding and putting away baby laundry
  • Tidying the nursery
  • Preparing simple snacks or drinks if needed (meal prepping overnights available upon request)

Do you encourage sleep training during overnight care?

We don’t practice formal sleep training during overnight support. Instead, we focus on establishing healthy sleep foundations using gentle, baby-led techniques. By promoting consistent routines, soothing methods, and calm environments, we help set the stage for long-term sleep success when your family is ready for it.

What’s the minimum number of hours required per shift?

Our nighttime shifts are a minimum of 8 hours to ensure you get sufficient rest while we provide comprehensive care for you and your baby. Custom packages for ongoing or long-term support are available for families seeking consistent overnight care.

Is nighttime postpartum support only for new parents?

Not at all! While many of our clients are first-time parents, we support families at any stage—whether you’re navigating the newborn phase or welcoming your second (or third!) baby and need extra hands at night.

Will I have the same doula every night?

We strive to provide consistency by scheduling the same doula for your ongoing shifts whenever possible. If a change is necessary, we ensure a smooth handoff so you feel comfortable and supported every night. We’ll always make sure you know your primary doula(s) and have a chance to meet your back up doula if necessary before they jump in.

Can I customize the support I receive during overnight shifts?

Yes! Our care is fully personalized to fit your family’s routine and needs. Whether you want more focus on newborn care, maternal recovery, or meal prepping shifts, we’ll adapt our approach to ensure you get the most out of each shift.
