Finding out you're pregnant and getting ready for your new baby can be so exciting! You’re always looking for things for the baby, people are happy for you, and your family is growing. But bringing new life into the world and caring for their every need can get overwhelming. A postpartum doula might be just what you need. Let’s break down what postpartum doulas do and how we can best support you as new parents or after childbirth.
A postpartum doula is a trained professional who supports you after your baby comes home. Unlike a nanny, they focus on the whole family, not just the baby (and they’re trained in postpartum and infant care!). They provide emotional support, newborn care, and practical help, making your transition into parenthood more manageable.
A postpartum doula is an advocate, a guide, an extra pair of hands, and a listener. They meet you where you are to help you feel confident and supported as you adjust to this new life.
Practical guidance
Whether you’re a new parent or not, bringing a baby into the world comes with a learning curve. It probably seems like you’ve been given advice from everyone you know since the moment you announced your pregnancy, but a postpartum doula does more than that. They offer hands-on support. They’re ready to provide guidance on infant care, recovery, feeding your baby, and any other challenges that come up. We are your go-to resource for navigating these first few months! If we don’t know how to help, our job is to make sure to find someone who can.
Emotional Support
Postpartum life can be tough. You might experience all kinds of emotions while losing sleep and taking on new responsibilities. It’s a lot to deal with on your own. A postpartum doula provides a listening ear and empathy when you need it most. They can help you process your feelings without judgment so you know you’re cared for. Many doulas, like our team, have additional training in perinatal mood and anxiety disorders and can help recognize signs and symptoms if extra support or help is needed too.
Newborn Care
A postpartum doula can care for your baby while you rest, spend time with other family members, or handle other tasks. We’ll even watch baby while you get a full night of uninterrupted sleep! We can help with diapering, soothing, and establishing a sleep routine. We’re ready with tips to make things easier, and eager to answer all your questions. It’s all about ensuring both you and your baby get the rest you need.
Household Tasks
You shouldn’t have to juggle baby care and household chores alone. A postpartum doula can help with light housekeeping, meal prep, and laundry. Ensuring your home is tidy and calm gives you less to worry about. Our goal is to lighten your load so you can focus on yourself and your family.
Partner and Sibling Support
Postpartum doulas aren’t just there for moms. They support partners as well, providing guidance on how they can help and bond with the baby. We also understand that this is a big change for siblings, so we can offer tips for adjusting to the new family dynamic. No one wants to feel like they’re in the way or being left out, and a postpartum doula can support everyone through this transition.
Resources
Whether you need a lactation consultant, a counselor, or a pediatrician, postpartum doulas can connect you with the right resources. A postpartum doula can help make sure you have access to the right care at the right time, while also making sure it’s a professional that would be good for YOU.

How long does a postpartum doula stay with you?
This depends on your needs and the agreement made. It can range from a few hours a week to several weeks. We have clients that hire us for 1-2 4-hour day shifts a week for the first 2-6 weeks, and others that have hired us for 6-7 nights a week for 2-3 months. It’s all about your needs and priorities in postpartum, and we’re here to help navigate that!
When should I hire a postpartum doula?
It’s never too early to plan for postpartum support. Many parents hire a doula during the 1st or 2nd trimester of pregnancy to ensure they have help lined up beforehand. Hearing of postpartum support after the baby is here? Still reach out, we’ll do our best to fit you in!
